Movie Review: Belle (2014)

I figured I should post a review, since I haven’t done that in a while, I don’t think. (Ahem, Disclaimer: Spoilers Ahead!) Anyway…, yesterday I watched the movie “Belle”:

belle poster

Because I’m a Disney dunderhead, I thought this was supposed to be a sort of retelling of “Beauty and the Beast”. I was wrong. I don’t know why they even titled it Belle, because, yes the title girl’s full name is Dido Elizabeth Belle Lindsay, but they call her Dido throughout the entire film. Were the makers of the movie worried that people would mispronounce the movie title if they had called it “Dido”? I don’t know. I just think they could have picked a better title. Seriously, the title “Belle” is really confusing. At least, I think so.

Regardless, I found the film captivating. It covered issues that were present at the time, such as slavery of blacks in Britain, the difficulties of Dido growing up as a mulato English heiress (due to her white father, a Royal Navy officer, leaving her his pension after his death), and the struggles of aristocracy for a black woman in English society.

For example, Dido was seen as enough of an equal to dine with her white family in private (she lives with her great-uncle (the Lord Chief Justice and the 1st Earl of Mansfield, William Murray and aunt Elizabeth, and her cousin, Lady Elizabeth (Bet) Murray. (Quick backstory as to how Dido came to live with them: Dido’s father had to go off on a naval excursion to the Indies and left her in the care of his uncle and aunt. Bet is the daughter of William and Elizabeth’s nephew, who later in life becomes the 2nd Earl of Mansfield (although that is not covered in the movie) and sent to live with her uncle and aunt. She is already living there with them when Dido is brought in.)), however, when there are guests attending meals at the house, she must eat separately from her family, but could not dine with the servants, due to social protocol, so says her uncle. There is a quote in the movie where Dido asks (more or less like so): “How can I be ranked low enough that I cannot eat meals with my family and our guests, but ranked too high to dine with the servants?”.

Anyway, it’s a great period-piece in my opinion and you should watch it. If anything at all but for to watch it as a purely historical standpoint. Also, need I mention that Tom Felton is in it? He plays James Ashford. That’s right, Draco Malfoy plays the son of an English Lord in this movie:

largeAnd, for any “Doctor Who” fans out there, Penelope Wilton plays Lady Mary Murray, the spinster sister of William Murray, I believe:

Well, there you have it. My review is that you should watch this movie. It’s fantastic, dramatic, lovely, and all-around interesting. Watch it!

What’s In A Name?: A Custom Design Commission!

Today I finished painting the name onto the boat, as I had planned. So….TA-DA:

IMG_2219.JPG-1

Since the sailboat is a Western White Potter sailboat, they decided to name it Harry’s Potter, you know, after the Harry Potter books and movies. I’m pretty sure that I said that in my previous post…. XD

Anyway, that’s my design and they love it! So, yay! Got a portion of my payment today and picking up the rest tomorrow. I’m also going to Red Robin tomorrow to see if they had a chance to review my application and to hand in my resume. It would be nice to have a steady job again instead of side jobs. -fingers crossed here- Not that I mind side jobs. They’re fun!

For finishing my commission today, I treated myself to ramen at the ramen bar “Hiro’s Ramen” in Philadelphia again. I took my youngest brother, Jae, with me. We got there a half hour before they closed, but they were kind enough to let us come in and order. We ate as quickly as we could so as not to hinder them too long. It was delicious!

Philadelphia is pretty at nighttime because everything is lit up! Also, there isn’t as much traffic at night.

Ah, home now and it’s nice and relaxing. Mom has HGTV on and it’s one of those “International House Hunters” shows. The couple in the show is looking for a home in Warwick, England. It looks so pretty! I love those thatched roof homes with the timber-styled woodwork. -sigh- It’s so pretty.

Look for my words again soon, I’m going to do some writing.

Between Errands

Yesterday morning and this morning, I woke to find that our youngest dog (she’ll be 2 in October) had piled all of her toys on top of me in my bed. She then sat down next to my bed staring at me until I sat up. Obviously, it was time to play. So, I collected her toys, set them aside momentarily to go through my morning routine of getting dressed and feeding myself (she’d already been fed so that was one less thing to do) and then commenced a lovely play session. Her favorite thing to do is to play fetch.

Then I went out to begin working on a sailboat. I’ve been commissioned to paint the name onto the port and lee sides of the hull at the stern of the boat. Since it’s a Western Potter sailboat, the family has decided to name it “Harry’s Potter” since they enjoy the Harry Potter books and movies so much. I managed to draw the design onto both sides before it began to grow dark, so my plan is to return to the boatyard and paint the designs today. Once it’s done, I’ll be sure to take pictures and share them with you all! I really do like the design I came up with for them. They wanted it to have Harry Potter and Nautical influences and they really love the design I drew. So, as soon as it’s painted, I’ll share the completed project with you all!

Right now, I’m sitting in my car, waiting. On Tuesdays, I drive around an old schoolmate’s stepmother so that she can do her errands. She can’t drive anymore and gave up her license a bit ago, so I help out and take her out on Tuesdays. It’s a nice little break in my schedule. Anyway, I’m waiting because she went into a shop and I have time to waste before she needs me to pick her up. Although, I never go far. Since I don’t have any errands to do myself today (aside from go paint a name on a boat), I decided to wait in the parking lot and play on my laptop. =)

Hope everyone is having a wonderful day! It’s very hot here today. I have my windows down but the fact that my laptop is burning my legs doesn’t help with the whole heat factor. This post is done. It’s too hot to keep my laptop here. Haha!

Playing With Fire: A Writer’s Life for Me!

For anyone who would like to get to know me better, know this: I like bonfires.

Not those massively large ones that people of yore (or maybe they still do?) dance around, but a nice simple campfire-sized bonfire. Like the one I’ve made tonight:

IMG_2206

I made it myself, I’m so proud! I spent an hour prior to this accomplishment, walking around my yard (my 2.5 acre yard…so exhausting! whew!) collecting twigs and sticks to use as fodder and feed so as to keep my fire burning well after dark.

I like to sit outside on my patio furniture, which I set up in the small courtyard out of my back door, because I don’t have a patio to use. So, I sit at my iron-wrought table and on a wooden chair (with matching benches and footrests) that my Pepere made for me and my family a few years back, and I write. I love to write outside, with a fresh pad of paper or an already in-use notebook, and a pen with ink (I’ve come to find that over time and multiple presses of pencil on paper, that pencil fades quickly and by the time I’m finished filling my notebook, the words I wrote at the start are much fainter than the ones I just finished).

I often struggle between my two passions of art and writing. Both are vying to be dominant in my life and I’m not sure which I want to make a career of, yet. I’m 25, I really should get the ball moving here….

Oh, Richard Hammond seems confused. Yes, yes, 25, still attending college (3 semesters left, but hey! I’ve been paying out of pocket, no loans please (although, I had to break down and take out a small loan a year ago…BUT, only $7,000 in debt! I can’t say I don’t pity those students who have racked up $70,000+ in student loans) …of course, that makes it take longer….)

Anyway, I like to write. I write a lot…A LOT! I prefer to write fiction, fantasy, and adventure, although, I’ve been dabbling in some sci-fi lately. My favorite things to write about are myths and legends and fables and fairytales, like fractured fairytales! Actually, fractured fairytales are some of my favorite reads nowadays! E.D. Baker is an exquisite fractured fairytale writer and my favorite, if anyone is interested in looking into the genre….

Let’s see, I really do write a lot. I always have a notebook and pen with me (one that can fit in my bag. (I usually have a backpack, though). I write while I’m standing in line at the store, or when I’m riding the bus, or am a passenger in a car. I write when I’m exercising on a stationary bike, during TV commercials, and the list really does go on from there.

Someday, I hope to be a well-established author, like E.D. Baker, Brian Jacques, or the guy who writes those “Game of Throne” books, uh…George R.R. Martin (and yes, I had to Google his name, and no, I have not read the books, nor do I watch the TV series that airs on HBO). There are other books and shows on my list that I’m trying to catch up with, so “Game of Thrones” is currently on the backburner. No worries, I’ll catch up eventually and give it a chance.

Of course, it would be nice to be as successful as J.K. Rowling and have a book I write (or a series, which I am currently working on) become a movie. Really, I think that would be thrilling! I’d want to work with the screen writer’s, though. I’ve taken classes on script writing for movies, TV, and theater. I think that’d be interesting, too.

Well, there you have it, I like to write. AND, you know a few more things about me now:

1. I’m 25 and still in college (going for a B.A. (Bachelor’s in Art. I already have an A.F.A.: an Associates in Fine Art) And I’m Minoring in French.)

2. I’ve just slipped that je parle française. Mon famille est Canadienne-Française! La plupart de la famille de ma mère parle français. J’aime parler avec eux. (Maybe I’ll do some posts in French!)

3. I like to have bonfires and write.

Look for my words again soon!

Time With Pepere, Life, and Top Favorite Authors!

Firstly, I am super excited that I do not have to wake up at 4 AM for the whole of next week, yay!

Secondly, I spent my day out with Pepere (my grandfather). We had a lovely lunch together at the local diner, then we went to Home Depot together with my Mom (his daughter). Mom wandered off to look at storage, and Pepere and I stuck together, finding the things he needed. Since he wants to redo his roof this summer, we gathered together roofing nails, and roofing caulk. We also got common nails, 5 new saw blades, and a pack of hook blades. I like shopping with Pepere. Actually, I like spending any time with Pepere. We talk a lot and usually have some pretty deep conversations about religion and life. It’s really nice. I like when he talks to me about it, and I’m glad that it’s stuff we can talk about together. My brothers don’t spend much time with him, so I think I’m the only one out of his 6 grandchildren (I’m also the oldest out of these 6) that he converses with this like. I feel honored.

Tomorrow, I want to take the pile of bricks to the dump that I have collected. Since I demolished our outdoor brick fireplace with a sledgehammer earlier in the week, I haven’t had time to do so, yet. So, I’ll do that in the morning. Then, I want to spend the rest of my day painting and tidying up my room. I may take some more clothes and things to Goodwill, also. If not tomorrow, then Sunday. I have recently decided that I have too many things and have been trying to slim down on my posessions. My room is just too small to have so much stuff in it. Plus, I don’t wear a lot of the clothes I’ve been giving away, anyway, and I’m sure that other people could use it more.

Jae is very far ahead of me in Naruto. About 20 episodes, or so. I tease him every time I see him watching an episode. I tell him to watch something else so that I can catch up. He just laughs and keeps watching. What a considerate brother. Aish….

Have you ever read any fractured fairy tales? I believe that I once mentioned before that Fractured Fairtytales are one of my favorite types of sub-genre. I do know that I said I am currently reading E.D. Baker’s “The Bravest Princess” which is part of the “Wide-Awake Princess” series. Aside from E.D. Baker, I also enjoy reading books by Gail Carson Levine, Cornelia Funke (my favorite book by her is “The Thief Lord”, but she’s more famous for her “Inkheart” series), JK Rowling (Harry Potter, obviously), JRR Tolkien, TA Barron (his Merlin’s “Lost Years” series is outstanding!), and Brian Jacques (I grew up on his “Redwall” series!!! Ah…brave, little Mathias — “I am that is”!)! There are plenty more authors, too, but these seven authors are my top favorites! They inspire me when I write and I hope to be as great as them some day.

I think this is it for now. I want to read some more before bed. …I feel like this is turning into a reading and writing blog, haha! No worries, it will continue to be random and chipper, I think.

Look for my words again soon!

Rainstorms and Tea

It started to downpour as I finished the Pilot episode of AMC’s TURN. So, I’ve shut off the air conditioner and televsion and opened the door to listen to the rain. It really is a lovely sound. I like the way the raindrops patter off the maple leaves of the tree just outside the windows. Plus, there is always the refreshing scent of moist earth after a storm. Supposedly, the forecast warns of thunderstorms off and on for the next three hours. It’s funny. I used to be terrified of thunderstorms when I was little, but after spending a year down in Florida and experiencing their thunderstorms, I find the ones here at home much more simple and kind. That being said, I think that I enjoy them now. Although, the occasional unsuspecting clap of thunder does startle me and send my heart racing.

Haha, now the tree frogs have started to croak. Guess they like the rain, too. Anyway, I want to talk about this Pilot episode a bit. AMC’s TURN just started last year, apparently, but I’ve only just recently come across it on Netflix (can you tell that I’m a Netflix enthusiast, yet?). It really took me until midway to 3/4 of the way through the hour-long episode to figure out who was who and their relations to one another. I’m not saying that it’s not interesting, and I’ll definitely be trying the second episode soon, just that it was a bit confusing at the start. It built up ground, though, as it went.

In other news, I started my commission yesterday. After buying the supplies this past weekend, I sat down last night and sketched out the two dogs I’ll be painting onto a 16×20 canvas. I had planned to start painting it today, but after blood-work yesterday, resulting in a bruised left arm today, and a trip to the dermatologist (which I listened to the Siriusly Sinatra channel on my way there) and having an incision made into my right arm, both are rather sore and I don’t want to put them to the constant up and down and sideways strokings that paintbrushes require. But, I’ll probably attempt it tomorrow for a bit and see how it goes…. I’d love to share the finished product with you all once I’ve finished it. In fact, I would post the progress photos I have already taken, but since this is a piece for a customer, I want to ask their permission to share the images. After all, I’m painting a portrait of her two dogs. Maybe she won’t want it to be shared? I will ask.

Hm, the rain seems to have stopped for now. I hope it picks back up, though. In the meantime, maybe my younger brother will return home from Starbucks with that green tea lemonade I asked for earlier. Since he went to Starbucks originally to meet a friend of his, I doubt I’ll get my drink any time soon, haha!

I might write more later tonight. In fact, I’m thinking that I most likely will. So, look for my words again soon.

Oh, P.S.. On a side note, I had the sudden thought last night while watching Naruto, that Lord Orochimaru could well be the original Lord Voldemort, what with his affixation on snakes, his pale skin, and dangerous demeanor. That is all.
